Bu çalışma, Türk tiyatrosunun kurucu figürlerinden Muhsin Ertuğrul’un çeviri ve uyarlama faaliyetlerini çeviri sosyolojisi bağlamında değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Pierre Bourdieu’nün habitus, alan, sermaye ve illusio gibi temel kavramlarından hareketle, Ertuğrul’un bilinen sahne ve yönetici kimliklerinin ötesinde çevirileri ve uyarlamalarıyla tiyatro alanında kültürel dönüşümü hedefleyen bir eyleyici olduğu öne sürülmektedir. Ertuğrul’un çocukluk yıllarından itibaren çok dillilik, sanatsal deneyimler ve Avrupa’daki temaslarla şekillenen habitusu onun kültürel alanda dönüştürücü bir eyleyici olarak konumlanmasına nasıl zemin hazırladığı irdelenmiştir. Çalışmada temel kaynak olarak Ertuğrul’un otobiyografisi ve İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Atatürk Kitaplığı’nda yer alan Muhsin Ertuğrul Arşivi’nden faydalanılmıştır. Ertuğrul’un eser seçimlerinin bireysel estetik kaygılardan çok, dönemin toplumsal, kültürel ve ideolojik yapılarına bağlı olarak şekillendiği izlenmiştir. Darülbedayi, Ferah Tiyatrosu, Muhsin Ertuğrul ve Arkadaşları gibi topluluklardaki uygulamaları ve süreli yayınlardaki görüşleri ışığında çeviri ve uyarlamanın, sanatçının kültürel otoritesini tesis etmesinde nasıl bir sermaye biriktirme aracı olarak işlev gördüğü tartışılmıştır.
This study aims to evaluate the translation and adaptation activities of Muhsin Ertuğrul, one of the founding figures of Turkish theatre, within the framework of translation sociology. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s key concepts—habitus, field, capital, and illusio—it is argued that Ertuğrul was strategic agent aiming for cultural transformation in the theatrical field through his translations and adaptations, beyond his well-known identities in stage performance and management. The study examines how Ertuğrul’s habitus, shaped from childhood by multilingualism, artistic experiences, and contacts in Europe, laid the groundwork for his positioning as a transformative agent in the cultural sphere. Primary sources include Ertuğrul’s autobiography and the Muhsin Ertuğrul Archive housed at the Atatürk Library of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The analysis suggests that Ertuğrul’s choice of works was guided less by individual aesthetic concerns than by the prevailing social, cultural, and ideological structures of his time. Finally, in light of his practices in institutions such as Darülbedayi, Ferah Tiyatrosu and Muhsin Ertuğrul ve Arkadaşları, as well as his views expressed in periodicals, the study discusses how translation and adaptation functioned as a tool for capital accumulation in establishing the artist's cultural authority.
