Demographic and Medical Profile of Patients Applying to a Prosthetic Dentistry Clinic: A Retrospective Analysis

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of systemic diseases in patients presenting to the Prosthetic Dentistry Clinic at Giresun University Faculty of Dentistry, to examine the distribution of these diseases across different age and gender groups, and to highlight the importance of obtaining a medical anamnesis in dental patients. Methods: The age, gender, and systemic disease status of 1160 patients who presented to our clinic between October 1, 2024, and October 1, 2025, and whose medical history was available in a digital format, were recorded. The obtained data were statistically analyzed. Results: In this study, the medical history records of 1160 patients, 667 (57.5%) were females and 493 (42.5%) were males. Of the patients included in the study, 451 (38.8%) had a systemic disease. Cardiovascular diseases were the most frequently observed systemic conditions, present in 344 patients (29.7%). No statistically significant difference was found between genders in terms of the frequency of systemic diseases, except for psychiatric disorders (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that the most common systemic diseases among patients applying to the faculty of dentistry for prosthetic treatment were cardiovascular and endocrine diseases. Dentists should take a detailed medical history before examination and dental treatment to prevent complications related to these conditions.
