The priority issues in current planning agenda have been seeking solutions to socio-spatial and ecological problems such as poverty, climate crisis, ecological concerns, and access to safe water and food. These pursuits can be seen as an emphasis to the cities should be developed as self–sufficient, easily accessible, and livable socio–spatial units by making them at peace with nature. Therefore, the concept of the optimal city is considered a significant alternative in ensuring cities are made livable and manageable in terms of spatial size, demographic capacity, and service provision. The aim of this research is to create a dataset for determining the optimal city size for Turkish cities. The study identifies spatial, socio-cultural, economic, ecological, and governance requirements for optimal city size and establishes a set of indicators based on the dynamics unique to Turkish cities, focusing on the relations between population–service–space. It is considered that this indicator set will contribute to the current planning debates on making cities environmentally, socially and economically sustainable and resilience by developing them as socio–spatial units in harmony with nature.
</trans-abstract>
