Abstract

This study evaluated the hydroalcoholic extract of Tamarix algeriensis aerial parts' antihyperglycemic and antioxidant properties. In Batna, Algeria, the researchers gathered the plant's aerial parts, which they then macerated to create the extract. Numerous bioactive substances, such as flavonoids, saponins, polyphenols, steroids, terpenoids, tannins, and anthracene glycosides, were found during the initial phytochemical screening. Numerous techniques, such as ferric reducing power (FRAP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and DPPH free radical scavenging tests, were used to confirm the extract's strong antioxidant activity in vitro. Additionally, the extract demonstrated strong inhibitory activity against the enzyme α-amylase, which is essential for the breakdown of carbohydrates. Tamarix algeriensis extract significantly decreased blood glucose levels after a glucose load in in vivo tests on normoglycaemic mice, demonstrating a hypoglycaemic effect. These findings imply that Tamarix algeriensis hydroalcoholic extract may be a useful source of therapeutic compounds for the treatment of diabetes and oxidative stress.
