Adsorption of Uranyl Ions in Aqueous Solutions of Maleic Anhydride-alt-Styrene Copolymers

Abstract

In this study, Maleic anhydride-alt-styrene (MA/S) copolymer was synthesized in benzene solution with an initiator such as azobisisobutyronitrile by free radical copolymerization. Anhydride units are seen in resulting copolymer and anhydride units are active. By considering activities of anhydride units, adsorptions of uranyl ions in uranyl nitrate solutions with spectrophotometric method was investigated uranyl ion concentration, at different temperature and dimension of MA/S copolymer. In the adsorption investigation, Langmuır (L) type was suggested according to Giles classification system. Binding parameters such as equilibrium constant (K), monolayer coverage (n) and thermodynamic parameters such as heat of adsorption (ΔH), free energy of adsorption (ΔG) and entropy of adsorption (ΔS) for (MA/S) copolymer were calculated by using van’t Hoff and Klotz linearization methods.   As a result, it can be stated that MA/S copolymer can be used as a good absorbent for uranyl from removal from waste water.
