Distance education has evolved over the years in parallel with the development of mass media. Initially conducted via letter, distance education has gradually evolved into radio, television, and eventually the internet, relying on technological advancements. The complete transition from traditional education to distance learning, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, has increased interest in this form of education. The implementation of distance learning methods at all levels of education, from the lowest to the highest, has caught educators and students off guard and unexpectedly. While this form of education initially presented a source of stress, over time, factors such as gaining experience with digital applications and utilizing the advantages offered by digital technologies in course resources have relatively diminished negative perceptions of this form of education. Today's university-aged young generation, born into an environment where computers and the internet are actively involved in human life, is increasingly interested in an education supported by digital methods. Changing generations, developing technologies, and the pandemic have increased academic awareness of this issue, and distance learning methods have begun to be used more effectively. This study aims to develop a sociological perspective on the status of distance education in higher education, and the changes and developments of this form of education, based on digital advancements. To this end, we examine the pandemic-related distance education process in higher education institutions worldwide and examine the importance of digital technologies in this process.
Uzaktan eğitim, yıllar içerisinde kitle iletişim araçlarının gelişimiyle paralel bir şekilde gelişim göstermiştir. Başlarda mektup yoluyla gerçekleştirilen uzaktan eğitim, zaman içerisinde teknolojik yöntemlere bağlı olarak radyo, televizyon ve nihayetinde internet yoluyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Özellikle COVID-19 pandemi sürecinde geleneksel eğitimin tamamen uzaktan eğitime aktarılması, bu eğitime duyulan ilgiyi artırmıştır. Eğitimin en alt kademesinden en üst kademesine kadar bütün aşamalarında uzaktan eğitim yöntemlerinin uygulaması, eğitimciler ile öğrencileri hazırlıksız ve ani bir şekilde yakalamıştır. Başlarda bu eğitim şekli her ne kadar stres kaynağı olsa da zaman içerisinde dijital uygulamalar üzerinde tecrübe kazanma, ders kaynaklarında dijital teknolojilerin yarattığı kolaylıklardan faydalanma gibi etkenler bu eğitim türüne karşı oluşan olumsuz görüşleri nispeten azaltmıştır. Günümüzde üniversite çağlarını yaşayan genç nesil, bilgisayar ve internetin insan hayatında aktif olarak yer aldığı bir ortamda doğduğu için dijital yöntemlerle desteklenen bir eğitime daha çok ilgi duymaktadırlar. Değişen nesiller, gelişen teknolojiler ve yaşanan pandemi süreci akademisyenlerin de bu konudaki farkındalığını artırmış, uzaktan eğitim yöntemleri daha etkili kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada yükseköğretimde dijital gelişmelere bağlı olarak uzaktan eğitimin durumu, bu eğitim türünün değişim ve gelişimiyle ilgili sosyolojik bir perspektif oluşturulmak istenmiştir. Bunun için dünya genelinde yükseköğretim kurumlarındaki pandemiye bağlı uzaktan eğitim süreci incelenmiş, dijital teknolojilerin bu süreçteki önemi irdelenmiştir.
