Investigation of the Relationship Between Physical Activity Levels and Mood State in Patients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between physical activity levels and mood in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. The cross-sectional study conducted at Sivas Numune Hospital included 50 patients with moderate or severe musculoskeletal pain for more than 12 weeks. Participants' pain levels were assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS), physical activity levels by International Physical Activity Questionnaire and depressive symptoms by Beck Depression Scale. In the study, 66% of the participants were physically inactive; however, there was no statistically significant relationship between physical activity level and depression score (p=0.96). Although it is thought that physical inactivity may be one of the factors affecting depression in individuals with chronic pain, this study showed that other psychosocial factors that affect depression may be at the forefront. In conclusion, it was concluded that the effects of chronic pain on depression may not be explained only by physical activity level and more comprehensive and multidimensional studies are needed.
