The Impact of Smart Glass Technologies on the Adaptive Reuse of Historic Buildings

Abstract

The adaptive reuse of historic buildings by tailoring them to contemporary conditions is of great importance for the preservation of cultural heritage. Since intervention on the facades of these buildings is restricted, ensuring comfort standards (heat and light control) becomes difficult. Traditional methods (curtains, blinds, etc.) can damage the aesthetic integrity of the building. In this study, the application of "Smart Glass Technologies" (Electrochromic, PDLC glasses, SPD glasses, thermochromic-photochromic glasses) which do not visually harm the historical texture in historic buildings was examined. In the study conducted via the literature review method, it was concluded that these technologies provide energy savings without spoiling the original facade character of the building, protect interior elements by filtering UV rays, and enhance user comfort.
