The 18th century Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico was an influential thinker in the development of historical consciousness with the ideas he put forward in his New Science. Vico tried to epistemologically justify history as a new science through his view that ‘man can only know what he has created and that this creation is a social and historical world’ and his statement that ‘truth and fact transform each other’. Instead of universality, transcendence and progressivism, which are dominant in the classical understanding of history, Vico emphasises the understanding of ‘new history’, which includes constitutive, constructive, corrective and destructive features in historical, cultural and structural contexts, and becomes a pioneer of the new history in his period. This study aims to show how Vico presents his view of ‘new history’ through the method of ‘aesthetic historicity’. The study is analysed through textual analysis, a qualitative approach supported by excerpts from the New Science. The findings reveal that Vico criticised his period by using aesthetics and poetry to understand and explain historical events; he presented a modern point of view that started by defining the nature of human beings with the primitive, uncivilised origins of humanity and then defined it with enlightened causality, but also developed scientific methods by using Cartesian methods in his understanding of history. As a result, apart from Vico's general understanding of history, his aesthetic understanding of history supported by modern methods, his effects on historiography, the importance he attached to history and the meaning it carried in his philosophy are emphasised. In the study, it is seen that Vico's ideas that human sciences in general and the science of history in particular should be given the necessary importance have had a significant impact especially since the second half of the 19th century and continue to be effective today.
18. yüzyıl İtalyan filozof Giambattista Vico tarih bilincinin gelişim serüveninde Yeni Bilim eseriyle ortaya koyduğu fikirlerle etkili olmuş bir düşünürdür. Vico “insanın ancak kendi yarattığını bilebileceği, bu yaratımın da toplumsal ve tarihsel bir dünya olduğu” görüşü ve “hakikat ile olgu birbirini dönüştürür” ifadesi üzerinden tarihi yeni bir bilim olarak epistemolojik açıdan temellendirmeye çalışmıştır. Vico, klasik tarih anlayışında hâkim olan evrensellik, aşkınlık ve ilerlemecilik özellikleri yerine tarihsel, kültürel ve yapısal bağlamlarda kurucu, yapıcı, düzeltici ve yıkıcı özelliklerin yer aldığı “yeni tarih” anlayışını öne çıkarmakta ve döneminde yeni tarihin bir öncüsü olmaktadır. Bu çalışma Vico’nun “yeni tarih” görüşünü yöntem olarak kullandığı “estetik tarihsellik”le nasıl ortaya koyduğunu göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma, Yeni Bilim eserinden alıntılarla desteklenen nitel bir yaklaşım olan metin analizi yoluyla incelenmiştir. Bulgular, Vico’nun tarihsel olayları anlamak ve açıklamak için estetik ve şiirden faydalanarak dönemini eleştiren; insanın doğasını, insanlığın ilkel, medenileşmemiş kökenleriyle tanımlamakla başlatarak devamında aydınlanmış nedensellikle tanımlayan ancak Kartezyen yöntemleri de tarih anlayışında kullanarak da bilimsel yöntemler geliştiren modern bir bakış açısı sunmuş olduğunu ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, Vico’nun genel tarih anlayışı dışında modern yöntemlerle desteklediği estetik tarih anlayışı, tarih yazımındaki etkileri, tarihe verdiği önem ve bunun felsefesinde taşıdığı anlam vurgulanmaktadır. Çalışmada Vico’nun genel olarak insan bilimlerine özel olarak da tarih bilimine gereken önemin verilmesi gerektiği ile ilgili ortaya koyduğu düşüncelerin özellikle 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren önemli bir etkiye sahip olduğu ve günümüzde de etkinliğini devam ettirdiği görülmektedir.
