Erken dönem hadis münekkitleri tenkit yöntemleri hakkında genellikle açıklama yapmamışlardır. Konuyla ilgili hadis münekkitlerinden aktarılan nakillerde rivâyet ve râvi tenkidinin ilham ve tecrübe gibi belirsiz gerekçelerle açıklandığı görülür. et-Temyîz ise hadis tenkit faaliyetinin nasıl yapıldığını açıklayan en erken kaynaktır. Kitabın açıklayıcı ve tasvir edici üslubu, onu literatürdeki diğer eserlerden farklılaştırmaktadır. et-Temyîz’in günümüze ulaşan nüshasının bazı problemleri bulunsa da bu nüshanın eserin büyük kısmını ve genel muhtevasını yansıttığı görülür. Nüshada 25 ana başlık bulunmakta ve bunların her birinde bir rivayet detaylı bir şekilde incelenmektedir. Eser boyunca müellif hadisleri tenkit ederken “genel bilgiye muhalefet” ve “tek bir isnadın muârazası” olmak üzere iki ayrı yöntemi kullandığı tespit edilmiştir. Ancak her iki yöntem de “muhalefet” başlığı altında değerlendirilebilir. Buna göre müellif hadislerdeki hataları tespit ederken rivayetin diğer nakillerle uyumluluğuna dikkat etmekte ve buna göre hüküm vermektedir. Aslında Müslim’in kullandığı bu yöntem, erken dönem hadis münekkitlerinin tamamının rivayet ve dolayısıyla râvi hakkında hüküm verirken kullandığı muâraza metodudur.
Early hadīth critics were generally reluctant to articulate the principles underlying their evaluative practices. In reports attributed to them, judgments on narrations and narrators are often justified through imprecise notions such as intuition or personal experience. al-Tamyīz stands out as the earliest work to offer a systematic and detailed account of how hadīth criticism was conducted. Its explanatory and descriptive mode of analysis distinguishes it from other texts in the ʿilal literature. Despite certain problems in the extant manuscript, the text appears to preserve most of the essential content of the original work. The surviving copy comprises twentyfive main chapters, each devoted to a close examination of a narration cited by Muslim. Throughout the work, the author evaluates narrations primarily through two approaches: contradiction with established knowledge and the comparison of a single isnād. Both approaches fall under the broader rubric of identifying contradiction. In practice, this method requires careful attention to the degree of consistency or inconsistency between a given narration and other transmitted reports. Muslim’s approach thus exemplifies the comparative mode of critique employed by early hadīth scholars in assessing both narrations and narrators.
