Evaluation of the Effect of Body Mass Index on Age Determination in Children at Different Dentition Periods by Demirjian Method: A Cross-Sectional Study
Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and tooth development in individuals with early and late mixed dentition and to evaluate the effect of changes in BMI on the accuracy of age determination.
Material and Methods: The study included 281 children aged 6-12 years. Obesity classification (underweight, normal, overweight and obese) was made within BMI of the cases and dental ages were determined according to Demirjian’s method. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate the agreement between chronological age and age calculated according to Demirjian’ method. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 11.5 software and significance level was taken as 0.05.
Results: The mean age according to Demirjian was 9.11±1.75 years. In BMI categories, ICC was 0.436 in underweight children, 0.408 in normal children, 0.579 in overweight children and 0.363 in obese children, and all values were statistically significant (p=0.015, p<0.001, p<0.001 and p=0.010, respectively). Intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.049 in children aged ≥6 and ≤9 years and 0.330 in children aged >9 and ≤12 years in terms of agreement between chronological age and Demirjian age. However, the agreement was statistically significant only in children aged >9 and ≤12 years (p<0.001). The reliability between the chronological age and age estimated by Demirjian’s method was higher in males than in females.
Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it is concluded that BMI should be considered as an important parameter for dental development, both in dental or medical and forensic sciences.
