Evaluating Youtube™ As a Source of Information on Using Clear Aligners in Paediatric Orthodontics

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the content, reliability, and quality of YouTube™ videos related to early orthodontic treatment with clear aligners, specifically focusing on Invisalign® First during the mixed dentition period. Materials and Methods: Google Trends™ was used to determine the most searched term related to aligners in the mixed dentition phase, identifying “Invisalign® First” as the leading keyword. A YouTube™ search with this term yielded 53 eligible videos from the top 132 results. A 13-item classification system was used to assess content richness. Video reliability and quality were evaluated using a modified DISCERN index and the Global Quality Scale (GQS), respectively. Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests were used for normality assessment, and Spearman’s rho was applied to evaluate correlations between variables. Results: Among the 53 videos, 11 were considered rich in content. A significant correlation was observed between content score and GQS, indicating that videos with higher content tended to be of better quality. However, 58% of the videos were rated as low quality, and no significant difference in reliability was found between rich and low content videos. Conclusions: YouTube™ videos on Invisalign® First are generally of moderate quality and reliability but lack sufficient educational content. Orthodontists should be encouraged to produce accurate, high-quality videos to improve public access to evidence-based information on early orthodontic aligner therapy.
