Parental-Reported Symptoms and Anatomical Risk Factors in Snoring Pediatric Dental Patients

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine whether daytime and nighttime symptoms are associated with snoring in children. Material and Methods: In this case-controlled cross-sectional study, 126 children who presented to the clinic for routine dental examinations were evaluated for eligibility, and 63 were included in the final sample (case group: snoring, n = 32; control group: non-snoring, n = 31). The Mallampati score and tonsillar hypertrophy were assessed during clinical examination using the Mallampati classification and Brodsky grading scale. Parents were asked whether their child snored and, if so, how frequently. In addition, a questionnaire based on the Turkish version of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire was administered to evaluate symptoms associated with snoring. Responses were recorded accordingly. Associations between categorical variables were analyzed using the Chi-Square Test and Fisher’s Exact Test, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: A significant association was found between tonsil size, Mallampati score, and the presence of snoring (p < 0.001). Snoring rates increased progressively across Mallampati classes I to IV, with rates of 42.9%, 48.6%, 60%, and 100%, respectively. Sleep-related daytime and nighttime symptoms—including difficulty breathing during sleep (p = 0.002), observed breathing pauses (p = 0.011), dry mouth (p = 0.035), night sweating (p = 0.004), morning headaches (p = 0.0001), and daytime hyperactivity (p = 0.005)—were all significantly more frequent among children in the snoring group. Conclusions: Pediatric dentists can play an important role in the early detection of snoring or sleep-related breathing disorders by questioning about daily symptoms associated with snoring, which can help reduce and prevent serious consequences.
