Frontal Sinus and Maxillary Growth Prediction In Class II Malocclusıons: Cephalometric Study Laser Applications in Pedodontics

Abstract

Sinuses are spaces that provide resonance to the voice, nasal drip, air warming, other special functions and contribute to midfacial growth and development. Frontal sinus is a pneumatic area that shows individual variability and located between external and internal laminas of the frontal bone. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between frontal sinus enlargement and maxillary growth during pubertal growth period in Class II malocclusion. This study was performed on 36 lateral cephalometric roentgenograms. The avarage observation period was 3,39 years range 12-16 years and all cases presented extension from pubertal growth spurt to the end of pubertal growth defined by the hand-wrist radiographic stages S-MP3cap Period I and MP3UDP3U Period II . Material was divided into two groups as Class I and Class II. Control material was consisted of Class I malocclusion. Periods and groups were compared with student’s t-test. Correlations between skeletal parameters and frontal sinus enlargement were analyzed. No correlation was found between skeletal parameters of Class II malocclusion and frontal sinus enlargement on lateral cephalometric roentgenograms. Results of this study demonstrated that, frontal sinus enlargement in Class II malocclusion is not a valuable indicator of excessive maxillary growth in different growth periods

Sınıf II Maloklüzyonda Frontal Sinüs ve Maksiller Büyüme Tahmini: Sefalometrik Çalışma

Abstract

Sinüsler, ses rezonansı, nasal drenaj, havanın ısıtılması ve başka özel fonksiyonları yerine getiren orta yüzün büyümesine katkı sağlayan alanlardır. Frontal sinus, frontal kemiğin iç ve dış laminaları arasında yer alan ve bireysel değişkenlik gösteren pnömatik hava dolu alan, kavite alandır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Sınıf II maloklüzyonlu bireylerde frontal sinüs büyümesi ve maksiller büyüme arasındaki ilişkiyi analiz etmektir. Çalışma, ortalama gözlem süresi 3,39 yıl olan hastalar 12-16 yaş arasında üzerinde pubertal büyüme atağından büyümenin bitimine kadar takip edilen 36 lateral sefalometrik grafi üzerinde yapılmıştır. Materyal Sınıf I ve Sınıf II olarak ayrılmış ve kontrol grubu Sınıf I bireylerden oluşturulmuştur. Frontal sinüs büyümesi el bilek grafilerindeki büyüme fazlarına göre S-MP3cap I. Periyot ve MP3U-DP3U II. Periyot olmak üzere iki periyotta değerlendirilmiştir. Sınıf II iskeletsel parametreleri ve frontal sinus yüksekliği ve genişliği arasında ilişki değerlendirilmiş; periyot ve gruplar student’s t-testi ile karşılaştırılmıştır.İskeletsel parametreler ile frontal sinus arasında ilişki olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Frontal sinus büyümesinin maksiller büyüme için bir indikatör olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır
