<p>Nurses, who constitute the largest group within healthcare services, experience variations in workload depending on their working environment. Nurses working night shifts, in particular, operate under physically and psychologically demanding conditions. This situation increases their mental workload and can negatively impact job satisfaction, performance, and quality of patient care. The aim of this review study is to examine the relationship between the mental workload experienced by nurses working night shifts and the conditions of their work environment. Night shifts have been reported to significantly affect nurses’ sleep patterns, social life, and overall health status. Key factors influencing mental workload include the physical conditions of the work environment, intra-team communication, managerial support, and stress management. Mental workload, which strains nurses’ cognitive capacity, tends to increase especially during night shifts. A supportive and well-organized work environment reduces mental workload and enhances employee satisfaction. It is recommended that strategies be developed to reduce the mental workload of nurses working night shifts and to improve their work environment. In this context, implementing practices such as providing psychosocial support, flexible working hours, and improving rest areas will increase nurses’ work efficiency and improve the quality of patient care.</p></trans-abstract>
