Investigation of Informative Text Writing Skills And Attitudes Towards Writing of 5th Grade Middle School Students

Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the informative text writing skills and attitudes towards writing of 5th-grade middle school students. The research was conducted according to the holistic single case study method. The participants of the research were determined according to the criterion sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling types. The study group consisted of 32 5th-grade students studying in a state secondary school in a province located in the south of Türkiye and 6 Turkish teachers working in the same school. Both qualitative and quantitative data collection tools were used in the research. The data collected through interview forms were examined with content analysis; the data obtained from rubrics, personal information forms and attitude scales were examined with quantitative data analysis methods. According to the results of the research, it was determined that the "form" aspect of the students' informative text writing skills was slightly better than the other aspects, but the "content, spelling and punctuation" aspects were insufficient. The teachers who participated in the research stated that this insufficiency was due to factors such as "family, teacher and environment". As a result of the research, it was determined that the students' writing attitudes were also insufficient. The students' interest scores towards writing were at the lowest level. Students with weak writing skills have a negative attitude towards writing. Suggestions were presented in line with the results.
