Investigation of Youth Leadership Characteristics of University Students in Terms of Various Variables

Öz

The youth leadership perspective, which focuses on ensuring that young people of today, who are expected to undertake important social tasks in the future, gain leadership skills, is very important in this respect. Although limited research has been done in Turkey, the rapid developments in science and technology require research as of today for the skills and abilities that young people, who form a dynamic part of the society, should have in the uncertainty of the future. This study aims to determine the youth leadership characteristics of students studying at Şırnak University in terms of various variables. For this purpose, the study was conducted with a total of 397 students studying at Mehmet Emin Acar campus of Şırnak University. Descriptive statistics (percentage, arithmetic mean, frequency, and standard deviation), t-test, and ANOVA analyses were performed on the obtained data. The level of p≤.05 was used in the analyses. As a result of the study, the Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale was calculated as .91. The leadership characteristics of the students were found to be high in total. In the study, no significant difference was found in the variables of youth leadership characteristics, general total, and sub-dimensions such as gender, educational status, monthly income, mother education, and father education. A statistically significant difference was found in the youth leadership characteristics of the students according to the variables of age, participation in cultural activities, and service in leadership positions. It was concluded that youth leadership characteristics differ significantly according to the variable of participation in cultural activities in total and according to sub-dimensions such as the desire of struggle and goal setting, communication, group skills, trust and reliability, decision-making skills, problem-solving skills, and responsibility.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Gençlik Liderlik Özelliklerinin Çeşitli Değişkenler Açısından İncelenmesi

Öz

Gelecekte önemli toplumsal görevleri üstlenecek olan günümüz gençlerinin genç yaşlarında liderlik becerilerini kazandırmayı odağa alan gençlik liderlik perspektifi bu açıdan çok önemlidir. Ülkemize sınırlı araştırma yapılmış olsa da bilim ve teknolojideki hızlı gelişmeler geleceğin belirsizliği içerisinde toplumun dinamik bir kesimini oluşturan gençlerinin sahip olması gereken beceri ve yeteneklerin bugünden araştırılmasını gerektirmektedir. Bu araştırmanın amacı Şırnak Üniversitesinde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin gençlik liderlik özelliklerini çeşitli değişkenler açısından belirlemektir. Bu amaçla Şırnak Üniversitesi Mehmet Emin Acar kampüsünde eğitim gören toplam 397 öğrenci ile araştırma yürütülmüştür. Elde edilen veriler betimsel (tanımlayıcı) istatistikler (yüzde, aritmetik ortalama, frekans ve standart sapma) t-testi ve one way ANOVA analizleri yapılmıştır. Analizlerde p≤.05 düzeyi esas alınmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda; ölçeğin Cronbach Alfa katsayısı .91 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Öğrencilerin liderlik özellikleri toplamda yüksek bulunmuştur. Araştırmada gençlik liderlik özellikleri genel toplam ve alt boyutları cinsiyet, eğitim durum durumları, aylık gelir, anne eğitimi, baba eğitimi değişkenlerinde herhangi bir anlamlı fark bulunamamıştır. Öğrencilerin gençlik liderlik özellikleri yaş, kültürel etkinliklere katılım ve liderlik görevlerinde bulunma değişkenlerine göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark bulunmuştur. Gençlik liderlik özellikleri toplamda ve mücadele isteği ve hedef koyma, iletişim kurabilme, grup becerileri, güven duyma ve güvenilir olma, karar verme becerileri, problem çözme becerileri, mesuliyet ve sorumluluk alt boyutları kültürel etkinliklere katılım değişkenine göre anlamlı şekilde farklılaştığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
