Home-Made Canned Pickles And Life-Threatening Botulism:A Case Report

Abstract

In this article, we describe a case of tetraplegia due to botulism after consuming home canned pickles. The patient was a 46-year-old woman with no known comorbidities. She was intubated in the emergency department and hospitalized in the intensive care unit after complaints of headache, diplopia, nausea and vomiting were followed by droopy eyelid, dysphagia and finally respiratory distress in the last 24 hours. Clostridium Botulinum toxin was found positive in the serum sample of the patient. Electromyelography findings supported severe presynaptic neuromuscular junction disease. Anti-toxin treatment was started. After 40 days in the intensive care unit and 10 days in the ward, he was discharged in good condition.
