From Nineteenth-Century Orientalistik to Twentieth-Century Islamwissenschaft: The Historiography of Islamic Sects in German Orientalism, Source Use, and Methods

Öz

This article examines the scholarly practices, source regimes, and methodological thresholds through which the historiography of Islamic sects took shape within the German Orientalistik/Islamwissenschaft tradition. Its central claim is that this historiography cannot be reduced to doctrinal classification; rather, it constitutes a multilayered field of inquiry formed at the intersection of philological discipline, the circulation of classical sources in German, historical-political interpretation, bibliographical control, critical editions, and processes of specialization oriented toward intra-sectarian texts. The study treats German Orientalism not as a person-centered narrative, but as a scholarly tradition in which different methodological orientations become visible in the works of particular researchers. In this context, Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer (1801-1888) is evaluated as a figure who helped establish the institutional ground of philological Arabistik; Carl Heinrich Becker (1876-1933) as a representative of cultural-historical Islamic studies; Theodor Haarbrücker (1818-1880) as a threshold figure in the German circulation of firaq/heresiographical literature; Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918) as a historian who read sects as forms of religious-political opposition; Carl Brockelmann (1868-1956) as a founding figure of bibliographical control; Hellmut Ritter (1892-1971) as a central figure in the discipline of critical editing; and Rudolf Strothmann (1877-1960) as a representative of specialization based on intra-sectarian Shiʿi sources. The article argues that the acquisition, cataloguing, and editing of the manuscript heritage, especially along the Brockelmann-Ritter line, became a foundational ground for research on the history of Islamic sects.
