Internationalization of Higher Education in Southeast Asia: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

This study adopted the research method of systematic literature review to map out the landscape of existing academic resources about internationalization of higher education (IHE) within the geographical context of Southeast Asia (SEA), in order to contribute to higher education development in the region and encourage more contributions from future scholars and researchers. By conducting literature search via the online database of ERIC (EBSCOhost), 56 publications were qualitatively analyzed which helped answer the four research questions set out in this research study. With the identification of the common themes covered by existing literature about IHE within SEA, specific directions can be provided for the academia in considering which areas about IHE within SEA are in need of further study. With clearer directions on the area for further studies, the academia can then provide more specific support in both intellectual and practical dimensions to continue driving IHE in SEA.
