<p>Located at a strategic point on the banks of the Danube, Nikopol Castle was conquered by the Ottomans in 1395. Nikopol, whose center was formed by the castle, was organized as a sandjak in the admistrative structure. The castle of Nikopol is one of the important buildings blocks of the Ottoman soverignty established in the region. Liman Castle on the banks of the Danube and Holovnik Castle across the river are structural parts of the Nikopol Fortress. The castle, which played a role in important developments such as the Battle of Nikopol, was subjected to sieges at various times and was lost in the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878. The Castle, which was under Ottoman rule for a long time, was the scene of many construction activities focused on construction, repair, fortification and maintenance. These works, some of which were carried out to repair the damage caused by the attacks in question, also demonstrate the importance of the castle for the Ottomans. A number of archival documents contain important records about the garrisons stationed in the fortress and fortifications on Nikopol. The orgnizational structure of these units, which were composed of competent personnel, is quite interesting and illuminates the history of the fortification. The construction activities and personnel transactions carried out at the Nikopol Fortress provide important insights into imperial system.</p></trans-abstract>
