19. yüzyıl sonlarında başkent İstanbul, dönemin birkaç metropolünden birisiydi. İstanbul’un kalabalık nüfusunun ihtiyaçlarını karşılayabilmek için ticarette etkin olmak gerekliydi. Bu durumun farkında olan devletlerden birisi Amerika Birleşik Devletleri idi. İstanbul’daki ticari duruma hâkim olabilmek ve buradaki ticaretini geliştirmek amacıyla ABD İstanbul Başkonsolosluğu hem ABD hem de diğer ülkeler ile yapılan ithalat ve ihracat ile bölgenin ihtiyaçları hakkında bilgiler veren raporlar hazırlamışlardır. Bu çalışmadaki amaç İstanbul Amerikan Başkonsolosluğu raporlarından istifade ederek 19. yüzyıl sonlarında İstanbul’un ticari durumu hakkında bilgiler vermektir. Çalışmada Amerikan konsolosluk raporlarının kullanılması objektif bir bakış açısının oluşmasında önemlidir. Ayrıca iktisat tarihi, yakınçağ tarihi ve uluslararası ilişkiler gibi disiplinler arası bir çalışma olması bakımından da önem arz etmektedir. İlk olarak 19. yüzyıl sonlarında İstanbul’un ticareti hakkında genel bilgi verilmiş, sonra İstanbul’dan yapılan ihracat ve İstanbul’a yapılan ithalat konularına yer verilmiştir. Sonuç olarak o dönemde İstanbul’un tam anlamıyla bir üretim şehri değil, daha çok bir ticaret şehri olduğu kanaatine varılabilir.
At the end of the 19th century, the capital Istanbul was one of the few metropolises of the period. It was necessary to be active in trade in order to meet the needs of Istanbul’s crowded population. One of the states that was aware of this situation was the United States of America. In order to control the commercial situation in Istanbul and develop trade here, the US Consulate General in Istanbul has prepared reports providing information about imports and exports with both the USA and other countries and the needs of the region. The aim of this study is to provide information about the commercial situation of Istanbul in the late 19th century by using the reports of the American Consulate General in Istanbul. The use of American consulate reports in the study is important in creating an objective perspective. It is also important as it is an interdisciplinary study such as economic history, modern history and international relations. First, general information about the trade of Istanbul in the late 19th century was given, then the exports from and imports to Istanbul were included. As a result, it can be concluded that Istanbul was not exactly a production city at that time, but rather a trade city.
