Synthesis and Characterization of 1,3-Disubstituted Benzimidazolium Salts
Abstract
Benzimidazole derivatives are prominent heterocyclic compounds, noted for their broad spectrum of biological activities and diverse application potential. In this study, novel benzimidazolium salts were synthesized via the reaction of various aryl halides with benzimidazole cores. Environmentally friendly solvents and high-purity, commercially available aryl groups were employed to ensure high yield and purity during the synthesis. The method presented herein offers a reliable, efficient, and scalable approach for the synthesis of benzimidazolium salts and contributes to their potential applications in pharmaceuticals, catalysis, and materials science. The structural characterization of the synthesized compounds was carried out using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR), and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (¹³C-NMR) spectroscopy. The spectral data confirmed salt formation through characteristic shifts in N–H and C–N stretching frequencies, as well as downfield shifts observed in the proton signals of the benzimidazole ring. Compared to their salt precursors, the synthesized benzimidazolium salts exhibited significantly higher water solubility, indicating improved bioavailability potential for pharmaceutical applications.
