Body Awareness, Respiratory and Peripheral Muscle Functions in COPD versus Asthma: A Retrospective Study

Abstract

Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are both common respiratory diseases, but differ in their pathophysiology and clinical findings. Understanding the comparative effects of respiratory and peripheral functions and body awareness in individuals with COPD and asthma is important for improving management strategies. Method: Eighteen individuals with COPD (9F, 9M, 62.774.58 years) and 32 individuals with asthma (28F, 4M, 43.4315.16 years) participated in the study. Pulmonary function, maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), handgrip strength (HGS) were measured and recorded. Body awareness was assessed with Body Awareness Questionnaire (BAQ). Results: According to age and sex adjusted data, FEV1%, FVC%, FEF25-75% in individuals with COPD were lower than those with asthma (p<0.001, p=0.010, and p<0.001, respectively). The MIP, MEP and HGS values were higher in COPD (p=0.014, p<0.001, p=0.030). The BAQ scores were similar between groups (p=0.768). Discussion: This study highlights significant differences between COPD and asthma in terms of pulmonary functions and respiratory and peripheral muscle strength. The similar body awareness despite differences in extrapulmonary effects of COPD and asthma suggests that body awareness is a complex and multidimensional concept that needs to be addressed within the context of pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
