The Relationship Between Participation, Musculoskeletal Problems and Job Satisfaction in Physiotherapists

Abstract

Purpose: Physiotherapists face physical demands during the profession, which increase the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). These problems may influence physical functions and well-being such as job satisfaction. While there are studies investigating the musculoskeletal problems and job satisfaction in physiotherapists, the studies about participation and its association with these factors are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between participation level, musculoskeletal problems, and job satisfaction in physiotherapists. Method: Physiotherapists with a mean age of 36.77 ± 7.46 years were included in this study. Participation level was assessed using the Participation Scale (P-Scale). Musculoskeletal problems were assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). Job satisfaction was evaluated using Job Satisfaction Scale. Spearman correlation analyses were performed to analyze the relationships between participation, musculoskeletal problems, and job satisfaction. Results: The P scale score was moderately negatively correlated with job satisfaction (r = −0.379, p = 0.005). It showed moderate positive correlations with the number of body regions with pain or discomfort in the past 12 months (r = 0.396, p = 0.003) and the number of regions with pain in the past 7 days (r = 0.367, p = 0.006). A moderate positive correlation was observed between the P scale score and the number of regions with activity limitation due to pain in the past 12 months (r = 0.466, p<0.001). Discussion: Participation level in physiotherapists was associated with both job satisfaction and musculoskeletal problems. These findings suggest that both physical functions and well-being should be considered to support participation in daily life.
