Drugs, Food And Non-Alcoholic Drinks Causing False Positive Breath Alcohol Test

Abstract

Ethyl alcohol is a psychoactive substance known for its addictive properties. It has been widely used in the various cultures since ancient times. Ethanol causes behavioral and emotional changes in people depending on the dose and frequency. Alcohol is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. For this reason, the breath alcohol test is performed during traffic checking with an alcohol- meter to understand whether the person consumed alcohol or not. Some researchers have shown that many factors that can affect the result of the breath alcohol test and this test may cause false positive results if tested within the first 15 minutes. It has been observed that inhaler drugs, pharmaceutical preparations containing ethanol as a solvent, oral care products such as mouthwash, some cancer drugs, homeopathic preparations, energy drinks, matured fruits and vegetables temporarily affect the breath alcohol test. The purpose of this review is to investigate the factors affecting the breath alcohol test in detail and to evaluate how the use of these factors affect the breath alcohol test with the help of current data in the literature.

Nefes Alkol Testinde Yalancı Pozitifliğe Sebep Olan İlaç, Gıda ve Alkolsüz İçecekler

Abstract

Etil alkol bağımlılık yapma özelliği ile bilinen ve antik çağlardan itibaren çeşitli kültürlerde yaygın olarak kullanılan psikoaktif bir maddedir. Tüketilen doza ve sıklığa bağlı olarak insanlar üzerinde davranışsal ve duygusal değişikliklere sebebiyet vermektedir. Alkol, trafik kazalarının ana nedenlerinden biri olarak görülmektedir. Bu sebeple, trafik kontrollerinde kişinin alkollü olup olmadığını anlamak için alkol-metre ile nefes alkol testi yapılmaktadır. Yapılan araştırmalar, nefes alkol test sonucunu etkileyen çok sayıda faktör olduğunu ve bu testin ilk 15 dakika içinde yapılması durumunda yalancı pozitif sonuçlara neden olabileceğini göstermektedir. Astım tedavisinde kullanılan inhaler ilaçların, çözücü olarak etanol içeren farmasötik prepatların, gargara gibi ağız bakım ürünlerinin, bazı kanser ilaçlarının, homeopatik preparatların, enerji içeceklerinin ve olgunlaşmış meyve ve sebzelerin nefes alkol testini geçici olarak etkilediği gözlenmiştir. Bu derlemenin amacı, nefes alkol testini etkileyen faktörleri detaylı olarak incelemek, bu faktörlerin kullanımının nefes alkol testini nasıl etkilediğini literatürdeki güncel veriler yardımıyla değerlendirmektir.
