Individuals with Hearing Loss and Down Syndrome: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Objectıve: The research aims to examine international studies on individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) with hearing loss. Materials and Methods: Using EbscoHost, SAGE, Springer Link, and ProQuest databases, 672 studies were reached in the first stage by searching with the keywords "down", "down syndrome", "hearing loss", and "hearing impairment". In the second stage, each study was examined in detail according to inclusion-exclusion criteria such as being published in English, being published in international peer-reviewed journals, and being an original research article. Results: In the last stage, 20 studies included in the research were examined in detail and tabulated according to the bibliography, method, number of participants, study area, and the environment in which the study was carried out. The findings of 20 studies carried out between 1972 and 2020 were examined within the scope of this research. Conclusion: It is seen that hearing loss is seen intensely in DS individuals, conductive hearing loss is more common in DS individuals with hearing loss, followed by sensorineural hearing loss after mixed type. DS individuals have moderate, severe, and profound hearing loss.

İşitme Kaybı Olan Down Sendromlu Bireyler: Sistematik Derleme

Abstract

Amaç: Araştırmanın amacı işitme kaybı olan Down Sendromlu (DS) bireylerle ilgili yapılmış uluslararası çalışmaları incelemektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: EbscoHost, SAGE, Springer Link ve ProQuest veri tabanları kullanılarak “down”, “down syndrome” “hearing loss”, “hearing impairment” anahtar sözcüklerle tarama yapılarak birinci aşamada 672 çalışmaya ulaşılmıştır. İkinci aşamada, ulaşılan herbir çalışma İngilizce dilinde yayınlanmış olma, uluslararası hakemli dergilerde yayınlanma, özgün araştırma makalesi olması gibi dâhil etme-hariç tutma krıterlerine göre detaylı bir şekilde incelenmiştir. Bulgular: Son aşamada ise araştırmaya dâhil edilen 20 çalışma kaynakça, yöntem, katılımcı sayısı, çalışma alanı ve çalışmanın gerçekleştirildiği ortama göre detaylı bir şekilde incelenerek tablo haline getirilmiştir. 1972-2020 yılları arasında geçekleştirilen 20 çalışmanın bulguları bu araştırma kapsamında incelenmiştir. Sonuç: DS olan bireylerde işitme kaybının yoğun bir şekilde görüldüğü, işitme kaybı görülen DS bireylerde daha çok iletim tipi işitme kaybının olduğu ve bunu mikst tipi sonrasında ise sensörinöral tip işitme kaybının takip ettiği görülmektedir. DS bireylerde orta, ileri ve çok ileri derecede işitme kayıpları görülmektedir.
