Examining the Relationships Between Smartphone Addiction, Well-Being, and Self-Management Skills Among University Students

Abstract

Objectives: Examining the relationships between smartphone addiction, well-being, and self-management skills among university students. Materials and Methods: Participants were university students who completed self-report scales: the Smartphone Addiction Scale for smartphone addiction, Wellness Star Scale for well-being, and the Self-Control and Self-Management Scale for self-management. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to examine the relationships between these variables. Results: The regression model revealed a significant negative correlation between smartphone addiction and well-being (p < 0.05). Increased smartphone addiction correlated with decreased self-management skills, and overall well-being (p < 0.05; r = -0.266). Conversely, a moderate positive correlation was found between self-management skills and well-being (p < 0.05; r = 0.467). Conclusion: The findings suggest that excessive smartphone use negatively affects university students' well-being, possibly by reducing time allocated to other activities. The negative relationship between smartphone addiction and self-management skills aligns with existing literature, indicating that addiction may impair impulse control and other essential skills. This study highlights the detrimental effects of smartphone addiction on well-being and the protective role of self-management skills. Promoting these skills among university students may mitigate the negative consequences of smartphone addiction and enhance well-being.
