Kutsal Roma İmparatorluğu (Habsburg Hanedanlığı) elçilerinin ve heyetindekilerin (XVI.-XVII. yüzyıllar) Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda barınmasına tahsis edilmiş olan Elçi Hanı, günümüze ulaşmamış yapılar arasındadır. Bu çalışmada yapının XVI. ve XVII. yüzyıllardaki görünümüne şahit olan ve çoğunluğu bu yapıda ikamet etmiş Habsburglu seyyahların Almanca kaleme aldıkları seyahatnameler incelenmek suretiyle, kaybolan bu diplomatik tesis hakkında yeni bilgilere ulaşmak amaçlanmaktadır. Günümüze kadar gelen tarihsel süreç ile gravürlerdeki durumu ve tarihi haritalardaki konumu da incelenmiştir. Seyahatnamelerden elde edilen veriler değerlendirildiğinde, arazisinin Bizans ve Osmanlı dönemlerinde merkezi ve değerli bir konumda olduğu görülmektedir. Bulunduğu yerde Bizans döneminde bir kilise ya da manastır yapısı olduğuna dair anlatılar bulunmaktadır. Osmanlı döneminde ise harap halde olan bu avlulu yapının yerine Atik Ali Paşa Külliyesi’ne dâhil bir han olarak inşa edilen yapının sonradan Elçi Hanı olarak işlevlendirildiği kuvvetle muhtemeldir. Elçi Hanı’nın kullanıldığı süreçte yapısal özelliklerinin az değişikliğe uğramış ve Osmanlı’nın en güçlü döneminde kritik bir işlevi olduğu anlaşılmaktadır.
The Elçi Hanı, a building allocated for the accommodation of ambassadors of the Holy Roman Empire (Habsburg dynasty) and members of their retinues in the Ottoman Empire during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, is among the structures that have not survived to the present day. This study aims to provide new insights into this lost diplomatic building through an examination of German-language travel accounts written by Habsburg travellers, most of whom resided in the structure and witnessed its appearance firsthand during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The study also considers the building’s historical trajectory, its depiction in engravings, and its location on historical maps. The evidence drawn from these travel accounts suggests that the site occupied a central and valuable position in both the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Some accounts indicate that a church or monastic structure once stood there in the Byzantine era. For the Ottoman period, it appears highly likely that the building was originally constructed as a khan within the Atik Ali Pasha Complex on the site of this ruined courtyard structure and was later assigned the function of the Elçi Hanı. The findings further indicate that, throughout its use as the Elçi Hanı, the building underwent only limited architectural change and fulfilled a critical function during the height of Ottoman power.
