Ghulam Khaliq
Food Chemistry and Food Sensory Science

Ghulam Khaliq, PhD, is working as an Associate Professor/Director Graduate Studies, Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water, and Marine Sciences, Uthal, Pakistan. Before working at Lasbela University, he was a Research Associate in the Agriculture and Cooperative Department of the Government of Pakistan. He obtained his BSc and MSc (Hons) degrees in Horticulture from Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. He obtained his PhD degree in Horticulture from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He focused on postharvest physiology and technology in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals during his BSc and MSc (Hons) degrees. As a PhD student, he concentrated on understanding the mechanisms regulating fruit susceptibility to low-temperature stress during storage. He also worked on approaches to identify key genes modulating fruit resistance mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stresses. He has experience in food science, biochemistry, and plant molecular biology. His research is focused on the postharvest physiology of different fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. He is working on different postharvest technologies such as edible coatings, elicitors, biopreservative packaging, and the development of novel approaches to maintain quality and extend the shelf life of highly perishable products. His studies are focused on developing strategies towards a better understanding of the preharvest and postharvest factors that affect the quality and storage life of fresh produce and also on developing innovative technologies to overcome problems in industry. He is involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students with a special emphasis on postharvest physiology, plant growth regulators, mineral nutrition of plants, and plant biochemistry. He has supervised several postgraduate students. He has executed research projects supported by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. He also collaborates with many other research institutions around the world. He has published research articles, book chapters, conference papers, and reports in many national and international high-impact factor journals. He has received several research awards for the development of new technologies and meritorious performance in the field of science. He was awarded an overseas scholarship from the Ministry of Science and Technology for higher studies. He is a lifetime member of several scientific societies, including the Pakistan Society for Horticultural Sciences, Pakistan Botanical Society, and Pakistan Society of Plant Protection. He is working as an editor, associate editor, and editorial board member of several international journals. He is a reviewer for more than 70 international peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of several scientific committees for conferences, seminars, curriculum development, quality enhancement, and project evaluation. He has closely worked with the extension department, regional fruit specialists, storage operators, and industrialists to communicate research findings through a newsletter and arrange various awareness sessions. Dr. Khaliq has also organized several training seminars and workshops on fruit processing and preservation, integrated nutrient management, and climate-smart agriculture for the communities to improve the socioeconomic conditions of people by introducing new techniques in the agriculture sector for better livelihood.
