A Data-Driven Framework for Smart Waste Collection Point Location Selection in Seasonal Tourism Destinations: The Case of Bodrum

Abstract

Bodrum’s population increases four to five times its registered population during the summer months, significantly growing during this period. Therefore, Bodrum needs to plan municipal services for a temporary population rather than a permanent one. Therefore, from a waste management perspective, the fact that the existing collection infrastructure has been primarily built according to residential usage patterns will lead to environmental pollution and waste overflow incidents during peak tourism seasons. The current research introduces a hybrid MCDM approach for selecting the best locations for smart waste collection points in Bodrum, Turkey, through both literature and data-based criterion weighting. The proposed model consists of three components, namely: (1) Spatial data acquisition using OpenStreetMap, (2) Hybrid criterion weighting through the combination of weighting based on synthesis of existing literature results with the CRITIC method, and (3) Alternative ranking through the use of the TOPSIS method. Since there is not enough information regarding population density (C1) in OSM maps, nine other criteria were assessed. Three different seasonal cases and twenty sensitivity tests show that A6 (Gümbet Beach Entrance), A8 (Gümbet Hotel Zone North), and A1 (Bodrum City Center Bazaar) are top priority locations.
