Bibliometric Characteristics and Publication Outcomes of Medical Specialty Theses on Cirrhosis in Türkiye: A Nationwide Analysis of National Thesis Center Data, 2011–2025
Abstract
Liver cirrhosis is a chronic progressive liver disease and a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the bibliometric characteristics and publication conversion performance of medical specialty theses on cirrhosis in Türkiye. In this descriptive and retrospective study, medical specialty theses on cirrhosis completed between 2011 and 2025 and available through the National Thesis Center database of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) were reviewed. The theses were evaluated according to year of completion, language, institution, department, academic title of the thesis supervisor, publication conversion status, time to publication, indexing status of the publishing journal, and citation count. A total of 98 theses were included in the study. Of these, 98.97% were written in Turkish. The highest number of theses was completed in 2022 (n=14; 14.28%). The institution with the highest number of theses was the University of Health Sciences (n=16; 16.32%). Most theses were conducted in Gastroenterology (57.14%) and Internal Medicine (19.38%). Overall, 23.46% of the theses were converted into scientific publications. The median time to publication was 2 years (minimum, 1; maximum, 12 years). Of the published articles, 34.78% were published in journals indexed in SCI/SCI-E. The median citation count was 2 (minimum, 0; maximum, 78). A significant association was found between thesis type and publication conversion (p=0.008), whereas no significant association was observed between publication status and the other variables. The annual distribution of medical specialty theses on cirrhosis in Türkiye showed temporal fluctuations, with the highest number of theses completed in 2022. However, only approximately one-quarter of the theses were converted into scientific publications. Strengthening support mechanisms for the publication of thesis-derived research may help improve academic productivity and international visibility in the field of cirrhosis.
