Comparative Phenolic Profiling (LC-ESI-MS/MS) of Different Extracts of Polygonum afyonicum with Soxhlet Extraction

Abstract

Polygonum afyonicum Leblebici & Gemici is an endemic species that grows at high altitudes, forming a small shrub with a tendril-like growth pattern. This study was conducted to determine the phytochemical contents of the acetone and methanol extracts of this species. After identifying the species, extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extraction. Solvents were removed by rotary evaporation. Chemical characterization of the samples prepared for analysis was performed by LC-ESI-MS/MS. The most abundant phytochemicals in the methanol extract were quinic acid, protocatechuic acid, and gallic acid, respectively. Isoquercitrin, quercitrin, and gallic acid were identified in the acetone extract, respectively. The acetone extract was found to contain more phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties than the methanolic extract. Studies can be conducted to purify this highly concentrated content. It is also recommended that extracts be prepared with more apolar solvents for characterization.
