Muḥyiddīn Ibn ‘Arabī is a precious sūfī who lived in the late 6/12th and early 7/13th centuries. He wrote important works in various fields and made many psychological analyzes related to the nafs and states of it. Classification of the “powers of the nafs” is one of them. In his works, he divides the powers of the nafs into three parts such as nafs of lust, nafs of wrath and nafs of nātika. According to him, although each power of the nafs has its own characteristics, people with nafs of nātika are more accurate in making the right decisions. On the contrary, those who are under the influence nafs of lust or nafs of wrath make many mistakes and make life uninhabitable both for themselves and for those around them. In fact power of nafs that determines the character of each individual is different. In this sense the character varies through hereditery characteristics and information obtained form the social environment. When the commentaries related to the verses and tafsir examined, it is realised that the determinations made by Ibn ‘Arabī are correct. For example, in the Qur’ān God states that people who not using their minds “fall to the deepest place”. Ibn ‘Arabī also describes the people who have nafs of lust as "donkey character" and the people who have nafs of wrath as "dog character."
Muhyiddin İbnü’l-A‘râbî, 6./12. yüzyılın sonları ve 7./13. yüzyılın başlarında yaşamış önemli bir mutasavvıftır. Muhtelif alanlarda önemli eserler kaleme almış olan İbnü’l-A‘râbî, nefs ve nefsin halleri ile alakalı çok sayıda psikolojik tahlilde bulunmuştur. Bunlardan bir tanesi "nefsin güçleri" sınıflandırmasıdır. Eserlerinde nefsin güçlerini nefs-i şehvet, nefs-i gazap ve nefs-i nâtıka şeklinde üçe ayırmaktadır. Ona göre her nefis gücünün ayrı özellikleri vardır. Bununla beraber, nefs-i nâtıkanın güçlü olduğu kişiler doğru kararlar alabilme konusunda daha isabetli davranmaktadır. Buna mukabil nefs-i şehvet ve nefs-i gazabın etkisi altında bulunanlar, pek çok hatalar yapmakta ve hayatı hem kendileri hem de etrafındakiler için yaşanmaz hale getirebilmektedirler. Esasında her bireyin karakterini belirleyen nefis gücü farklıdır. Bu anlamda karakter kalıtsal özellikler ve çevreden edinilen bilgiler yoluyla değişkenlik göstermektedir. Âyetler ve bu âyetlere yapılan yorumlar, yazılan tefsirler incelendiğinde İbnü’l-A‘râbî'nin yaptığı tespitlerin isabetli olduğu görülecektir. Yüce Allah, Kur'ân'da, akıllarını kullanmayanların "aşağıların aşağısına düştüğünü" bildirir. İbnü’l-A‘râbî şehvet nefsi baskın kişileri "eşek tabiatlı" olarak; gazap nefis sahiplerini ise "köpek tabiatlı" olarak nitelemektedir.
