Parents' Perceptions and Awareness about Reading Aloud to Preschool Children

Abstract

Reading aloud is one of the most important activities that parents and teachers can engage with children. The purpose of this study is to understand parents’ perceptions and awareness regarding importance of regular read-aloud activities with their children. To achieve this goal, we collected qualitative and quantitative evidence about the factors associated with parents’ reading aloud habits, perceptions and awareness. Survey data was collected from a total of 487 parents (N= 487) in Turkey. Data collection instrument was adapted to Turkish from ReadAloud Project’s (2020) survey instrument. The original survey was conducted in the United States to assess parents’ perceptions and awareness regarding read-aloud activities at home. Variables that are significantly associated with read aloud activities of parents were presented and hindering factors were discussed.
