<p>During the Cold War, European navies were often overshadowed by the superpower rivalry. Using strategic culture theory as a framework and focusing on the cases of the UK, France, and Germany, this article analyzes the transformation of European naval power. It argues that these navies&#039; specialization and force structure within NATO were shaped not only by alliance demands and resource constraints but also by deeply rooted national strategic cultures. Britain&#039;s specialization in Anti-Submarine Warfare, France&#039;s pursuit of an independent deterrent, and Germany&#039;s alliance-focused, defensive posture are concrete reflections of these distinct cultural foundations. Through specialization and multinational cooperation, European navies, while lacking quantitative superiority, made indispensable qualitative contributions to Western sea power, serving as a critical force multiplier in the Cold War&#039;s maritime balance.</p></trans-abstract>
