Socrates’ philosophy as expressed in its most general form manifests itself withinthe framework of questions of the type “What is F-ness?” The method is determinantin the way an asked question is handled and the character of the philosophy thatis identified with it. This method is known as elenchus or the Socratic method. Thisstudy aims to generally explain what elenchus is and how it can be used. Plato and hisdialogues are at the forefront of the sources to look at for understanding the Socraticmethod. In particular, understanding the Socratic method will be studied throughPlato’s early dialogues. In this context, while Plato’s dialogues and Socrates’ approachconstitute one of the main pillars of this effort to understand, considering the sophistsas another pillar is also thought to be necessary. Understanding the sophists thatSocrates and Plato positioned themselves against, their philosophizing practices,and the methods that guide these practices is thought will make understanding the Socratic method easier. In this respect, the Socratic method will be evaluated in terms of its relationship with eristic, which isattributed to the sophists as their method. One of the main determinations of elenchus and eristic is that they result in aporia(expression of logical impasse). From this point of view, the study will explain the positions of these two methods and theirattitudes toward aporia.

Sokrates’in felsefesi, en genel haliyle ifade edilecek olduğunda, “F’lik nedir?” türündenortaya atılan sorular çerçevesinde kendisini göstermektedir. Ortaya atılan sorununele alınış biçimi ve bu yolla onunla özdeşleştirilen felsefenin karakterini belirleyenise ona atfedilen yöntemdir. Bu yöntem elenkhos’tur. Bu çalışmanın amacı genelolarak ifade edilecek olursa elenkhos’un çerçevesinin çıkarılmasıdır. Bu bağlamdatemel yol gösterici olarak Platon’un diyalogları ele alınacaktır. Özellikle erkendönem diyalogları üzerinden Sokratik yöntemin anlaşılması üzerine çalışılacaktır. Buanlama çabasının temel ayaklarından birini Platon’un diyalogları ve bu bağlamdaSokrates’in yaklaşımı oluştururken bir başka temel ayak olaraksa sofistlerin elealınmasının bir gereklilik olduğu düşünülmektedir. Sokrates’in ve Platon’unkendilerini karşılarında konumlandırdıkları sofistler, onların felsefe yapma pratiklerive bu pratikleri yönlendiren yöntemlerinin anlaşılmasının Sokrates’in yönteminianlamayı kolaylaştıracağı düşünülmektedir. Bu bakımdan Sokrates’in yöntemi olarakbelirlenen elenkhos, sofistlerin yöntemi olarak atfedilen eristik ile olan ilişkisindedeğerlendirilecektir. Elenkhos ve eristiğin temel belirlenimlerinden biri çıkmazlara(aporia) neden olmalarıdır. Buradan hareketle de bu iki tavrın bu çıkmazlarkarşısındaki konumları açıklanacaktır.
