The Dilemma of Public Pharmacists

Abstract

Background and Aims: The aim of this study was to determine whether public pharmacists are in a dilemma about opening a community pharmacy and to determine the effects of factors such as job satisfaction, occupational fatigue, burnout and organisational commitment in public institutions on their tendency to open a community pharmacy. Thus, by revealing the dynamics affecting the career choices of public pharmacists, we aim to provide a more comprehensive perspective on their professional lives. Methods: The sample of this study consisted of pharmacists working in public hospitals in Türkiye. The data were collected using the online survey method and completed with the participation of 336 public pharmacists. Job satisfaction, organisational commitment and occupational burnout questionnaires were preferred as data collection tools, and the data were analysed with tests that comply with normality assumptions. Results: It was found that working outside the job description had the highest effect on job satisfaction, occupational fatigue, burnout, recovery and organisational commitment. Similarly, it was concluded that the job satisfaction and organisational commitment of pharmacists who always had the idea of opening a community pharmacy were low, while occupational fatigue and burnout were high. Conclusion: It is concluded that for public pharmacists to work in an environment with high job satisfaction and organisational commitment, it is necessary to increase their professional prestige, especially to clarify their job descriptions and to create a health system where they can use their competencies.
