NAZISM IDEOLOGY IN TURKISH CINEMA: “KIRIMLI” FILM AND SEMIOTICS ANALYSIS

Abstract

In the 20th century, the cinema became an important communication tool when  the ruling sovereign powers reflected their ideologies and started to dominate the masses. Especially, when ideologies such as Nazism, Communism and Fascism dominated Europe in the first half of the 20th century, there was a period in which the ideological rhetoric dominated the cinema sector. The Nazis ideology had found a large place in the cinema sector since the Nazis came to the power in Germany in 1933. The ideology of Nazism was criticized in the American-made films such as The Great Dictator (1940), while it was exalted in German-made films such as Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will -1935) in the period when the Nazis were in power in Germany. The films regarding the ideology of Nazism have been produced in the period after World War II, when Nazism was formally abolished. In these films, the ideology has continued to receive heavy criticism. Especially in the Turkish cinema, it is seen that the ideology has been subjected to a wide criticism in the films which are subject to Nazism like the Ankara Expression (Ankara Ekspresi -1971). In this study, Burak Cem Arlıel's Kırımlı Film which was shown in 2014 was examined. The movie which is transferred to the screen from the novel of Cengiz Dağcı's Horrible Years is about the human tragedy and the pain of the Tatar prisoners captured in German prisoners camps during the Second World War. This study was based on Saussure’s notion on signs. In the film, the ideology of Nazism was examined, using the method of semiotics analysis and it was tried to show how the ideology of Nazism was reflected in Turkish cinema. Within the framework of the results obtained, Nazism ideology was subjected to a severe criticism as in other Turkish films on Nazi ideology.
