Bu çalışmada, Kuzey Kıbrıs yazılı basınının İsias Otel faciasını nasıl haberleştirdiği irdelenmiştir. 6 Şubat 2023 Kahramanmaraş depremine bu otelde yakalanan ve otelin enkazı altında kalan Gazimağusa Türk Maarif Koleji öğrenci, öğretmen ve velilerinden oluşan voleybol kafilesiyle ilgili basında çıkan haberler bu çalışmanın kapsamını oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmanın örneklemi yazılı basında sol ve sağ eğilimli, en çok satan dört gazetede (Avrupa, Yenidüzen, Kıbrıs ve Diyalog) depremin ertesi günü itibariyle bir hafta boyunca (7 Şubat 2023-13 Şubat 2023) yayımlanan haberlerdir. Karma yöntemin birlikte kullanıldığı çalışmada, haber sayıları ve haberlere ayrılan alan nicel içerik analizi tekniğiyle, ön sayfada yer alan haberler ise nitel içerik analizi tekniğiyle çözümlenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre Avrupa ve Yenidüzen’in konuya geniş yer ayırdığı, buna karşılık son yıllarda Türkiyeli yatırımcılar tarafından satın alınan Kıbrıs ile Diyalog’ta ise daha az yer verildiği belirlenmiştir. Özellikle Kıbrıs Türkiye’de habercilik yapan bir gazete görüntüsü sergilemiş, İsias Otel faciasını önem derecesinde ikinci sıraya koymuştur. Tüm gazetelerde konuya ilişkin arama-kurtarma faaliyetleri ve cenaze törenleriyle ilgili haberlerin yoğunlukta olduğu, haber metinlerinde dramatik söylemlerin ön plana çıktığı görülmüştür. Olayın arka planındaki nedenlere ve ihlallere ise genellikle değinilmediği saptanmıştır. Bu konuya değinen tek gazetenin aşırı sol eğimli Avrupa olduğu ancak onun da eleştirilerde çok keskin bir dil kullanarak suçlayıcı söylemlerde bulunduğu gözlemlenmiştir.
In this study, how the Northern Cyprus print media reported the Isias Hotel disaster was examined. The news published in the press about the volleyball team consisting of students, teachers and parents of Famagusta Turkish Maarif College, who were caught by the earthquake that happened on February 6th at Kahramanmaraş and remained under the rubble of the hotel, constitute the scope of this study. The sample of this study is the news published in the four best-selling left- and right-leaning newspapers (Avrupa, Yenidüzen, Kıbrıs and Diyalog) for a week (7 February 2023-13 February 2023) as of the day after the earthquake. In this study which mixed methods were used, the number of news and the space allocated to the news were analyzed with the quantitative content analysis technique, and the news on the front page were analyzed with the qualitative content analysis technique. According to the results of the study, it was determined that Avrupa and Yenidüzen devoted extensive coverage to the subject, whereas Cyprus and Diyalog, which were purchased by Turkish investors in recent years, gave less coverage. In particular, the newspaper Kıbrıs displayed the appearance of a newspaper reporting in Turkey, and placed the Isias Hotel disaster in second place in importance. It has been observed that all newspapers contained news about search and rescue activities and funeral ceremonies, and dramatic discourses came to the fore in the news texts. It has been determined that the reasons and violations behind the incident were generally not mentioned. It has been observed that the only newspaper that touched upon this issue was the left-leaning Avrupa, but at the same time it also used a very sharp language in its criticisms and made accusatory statements.
