Detection of Nitroaromatic Explosives and Heavy Metals Using Fluorimetric Methods

Abstract

The detection of toxic chemicals and explosive residues entering ecosystems as a result of rapid industrialisation and military activities is one of the top research priorities in modern analytical chemistry. Of particular concern are nitroaromatic compounds, which are recognised for their electron-withdrawing properties, and heavy metal ions, which accumulate in biological systems. These compounds pose a high risk in complex environmental matrices and require continuous monitoring. It is evident that traditional analytical methods, which are frequently employed in the extant literature, are encumbered by various limitations with regard to their applicability in field conditions, instrument cost, and the capacity to provide immediate results. This review article comprehensively evaluates the fundamental principles and current applications of fluorometric sensor technologies, which offer a powerful alternative in overcoming these analytical obstacles. The study examines the photophysical sensing mechanisms governing the interactions between the analyte and the sensor, and compares the hardware infrastructure of spectrofluorometric devices with UV-Vis systems.
