12 Eylül askeri darbesi ile ordu, ülke yönetimine el koymuştur. 6 Kasım 1983 seçimlerinin ardından TBMM yeniden açılmış ve Türkiye demokratik yönetime geçmiştir. Bu çalışma İngiliz parlamentosunun 1983 seçimlerine yaklaşımını ele almaktadır. Bu tarihte İngiltere’de Muhafazakârlar iktidardadır. Türkiye’de sağ kesimden bir partinin kazandığı 1983 seçimleri İngiliz hükümeti tarafından demokrasi yolunda önemli bir adım olarak görülmüştür. İngiltere’de ana muhalefette bulunan İşçi Partisi ise 1983 seçimlerine katılan parti sayısına ordu tarafından getirilen kısıtlamayı eleştirmiştir. Seçimlerin Türkiye’de hiçbir şeyi değiştirmediğini, askerin hâlâ ülke yönetiminde söz sahibi olduğunu ve anti-demokratik uygulamaların devam ettiğini savunmuştur. İngiliz parlamento tutanaklarının detaylı bir şekilde incelenmesi sonucu ortaya çıkan bu çalışma; İngiliz milletvekillerinin tartışmaları üzerinden İngiliz parlamentosunun Türkiye’deki 1983 genel seçimlerine ve demokrasiye yaklaşımının genel bir resmini ortaya koymaktadır.
With the military coup of 12 September 1980 in Turkey, the army seized the country's administration. The Parliament was reopened in Turkey after the election on 6 November 1983 and the democratic government was re-established. This study examines the British parliament’s approach to the 1983 Turkish general election. Conservatives were in power in 1983 in Britain. The British government considered the 1983 election, which was won by a party from the right wing, as an important step towards democracy in Turkey. The Labor Party, which is in the main opposition in England, criticized the army’s restriction on the number of parties participating in the 1983 elections. According to the Labour Party election in Turkey did not change anything. The army was still influential in the country’s administration and anti-democratic practices continued. This study, which emerged as a result of a detailed examination of the British parliamentary minutes, presents a general picture of the British parliament's approach to the 1983 general elections and democracy in Turkey through the debates of the British MPs.
