Araplar, henüz Müslüman olmadan evvel deniz ticaretinin yoğun olduğu Hindistan’ın güney sahillerinde yer alan Malabar-Kerala bölgesini sıkça ziyaret etmişler ve burada ticaret kolonileri kurmuşlardır. Arapların bölgedeki yerlilerle evlilikler yoluyla münasebetler kurmaları ise hem burada melez bir toplumun oluşmasına hem de İslam’ın kabulüyle beraber Hint İslam’ının ilk nüvesini oluşturan ve adına Moplah denilen bu Müslüman halkın teşekkülüne zemin hazırlamıştır. Fakat Portekizli kâşif Vasco da Gama’nın 15. yüzyılın sonunda Kalküta limanına ulaşmasıyla Hindistan’da köleleştirme ve sömürge döneminin başlaması, Moplah halkı üzerinde siyasi, ekonomik, sosyal ve kültürel bağlamda derin tahribatlara yol açmıştır. Sömürge devletlerinin sebep olduğu bu tahribatlara karşı kendi mücadelelerini vermek zorunda bırakılan Moplahlar, Hindistan’ın bağımsızlığını kazandığı 1947 yılına kadar geçen süre zarfında, Hindistan Hilafet Hareketi’nin de tesiriyle toprak ağaları ve özellikle İngilizlere karşı birçok isyana öncülük etmişlerdir. Dolayısıyla bu çalışmada Müslüman Moplahların içtimai hayatı ve sömürge karşıtı eylemleri hakkında bilgiler verilmiş olup, Hindistan tarihi alanında yapılacak benzer çalışmalara katkıda bulunulması amaçlanmıştır.
Before becoming Muslims, Arabs frequently visited the Malabar-Kerala region on the southern coast of India, where maritime trade was intense, and established trade colonies there. The establishment of relations by the Arabs with the locals in the region through marriages, on the other hand, paved the way for the formation of a hybrid society here and the formation of this Muslim people called Moplah, which formed the first core of Indian Islam with the acceptance of Islam. However, with the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama reaching the port of Calcutta at the end of the 15th century, the enslavement and the beginning of the colonial period in India caused deep destructions on the people of Moplah in political, economic, social and cultural context. The Moplahs, who were forced to fight against these destructions caused by the colonial states, led many rebellions against the landlords and especially the British, with the influence of the Indian Caliphate Movement, during the period until 1947 when India gained its independence. Therefore, in this study, information about the social life and anti-colonial activities of Muslim Moplahs is given, and it is aimed to contribute to similar studies in the field of Indian history.
