Care Needs of Women with Suspected or Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer During Hospitalization: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify care needs of women with ovarian cancer and suspected ovarian cancer during hospitalization. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out two university hospitals in İzmir, in Turkey. The sample included 100 women with ovarian cancer or suspected ovarian cancer in hospitalized. Care Needs of Women with Ovarian Cancer Questionnaire was used. We used descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results: The most important physiological needs of women during the hospital process were improving sleep quality, reducing fatigue. In the self concept mode, women’s needs, were getting face to face information about the diagnosis and treatment process and receive information from their doctor. In the role function and interdependence modes, one-third of women stated that the illness and hospital process affected femininity perception, Conclusion: Nurses who working in gynecologic oncology services should assess the needs of patients with ovarian cancer or suspected ovarian cancer and provide them with individualized, culturally sensitive informational, social, and emotional support from the first admission to hospital.

Research ethics board approval was obtained from Dokuz Eylul University Non-Invasive Research Ethics Committee (Decision No: 2017/02-18, Date: 09.02.2017). The participants gave both oral and written informed consent.
