A comparative study on bird strike of helicoidal and quasi-isotropic CFRP laminate plates: Effect of impact angle and circular cutouts

Abstract

This study numerically examines the impact of bird strikes on bio-inspired laminated composite plates. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer plates comprising 64 plies were examined under bird strike loading at six distinct strike angles (0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 45°, and 60°), with the angle defined as the orientation between the bird and the plate's normal direction. Three plate configurations are investigated. The first one is a hole-free plate, which does not include any cutouts. The second type is a plate that has two holes with 0.05 m radius The third configuration is a plate that has two 0.1 m radius holes at a distance of a quarter of the way from the center. Two stacking sequences are compared: conventional quasi-isotropic and helicoidal exponential. The bird is modelled using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. Bird strike at the plate constant 100 m/s velocities at the center. The strain energy time and damage dissipation energy parameters are investigated. Results showed that helicoidal layup had showed energy absorption performance compared to conventional quasi-isotropic laminated composite plates, particularly at low strike angles.
