Effect of Manufacturing Parameters on Screw Thread Microhardness in Wind Turbine Fasteners

Abstract

Screw studs used in Wind Power Plants (WPP) are currently mainly produced from 10.9 tempered steel. Threading heat treated steels allows heat treatment defects to be detected by magnetic testing after threading. All WPP studs are subjected to 100% magnetic particle testing for cracks after threading. The shaft Vickers hardness of the studs produced from 32CrB4 and 34CrMo4 raw materials was measured, then threads were threaded on the same samples at a fixed and standard speed. Vickers hardness distribution measurements on the threads of the studs were determined. Trials were first conducted on the shaft speed (rolling roller speed), which is one of the most important parameters in the process, during the rolling process of the studs observed to be out of the specified range. Threading trials by rolling at 28 and 40 speeds were performed for the determined samples. The effect of the speed on the Vickers hardness distribution on the threads after threading was examined.
