Surface glossiness properties of wood impregnated with some plant extracts

Abstract

Abstract: In this study, beech woods (Fagus orientalis L.)  were subjected to coating process with polyurethane, cellulosic and water-based varnishes after impregnated with  mimosa (Acacia mollissima) and quebracho (Shinopsis lorentzii) extracts at 5%, and 10% concentration levels and Tanalith-E at %4.5. The changes in surface glossiness were investigated after accelerated weathering for 100 and 300 hours. According to the obtained results, the highest glossiness values for before and after accelarated weathering were obtained untreated control samples. Also, the surface glossiness values were decreased with the accelerated weathering the except for polyurethane varnish. The best result for varnishes types in terms of glossiness have been obtained in polyurethane varnish. The surface glossiness of polyurethane gave higher values when the weathering period reached 100 hours as compared before weathering. When the concentration levels of tannis reached from 5% to 10%, the glossiness values were decreased in certain rates. When the wood materials that impregnated with mimosa and quebracho extracts applied to polyurethane varnish, they can be maintained both durability and surface glossiness for a longer time.
