Outcomes of COVID-19 restrictions on patients with type 2 diabetes in Turkiye

Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to assess the impact of the national COVID-19 lockdown in Turkiye, initiated in March 2020, on glycemic and lipid parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: We included T2DM patients who visited Akdeniz University Hospital between 11.03.2019 and 10.03.2021. Clinical and laboratory data (age, gender, blood glucose, serum creatinine, LDL, triglyceride, HDL, hemoglobin, HbA1c) were retrieved from the hospital database for analysis. Results: A total of 1,715 T2DM patients were included, with 828 males (48.2%) and 887 females (51.8%). The number of patients seen before and during the pandemic was 930 and 785, respectively. The mean glucose levels before and during the pandemic were 153 mg/dl (149.25-157.47) and 165 mg/dl (160.14-170.62), respectively (p<0.001). HbA1c levels increased from 8.11% (7.99-8.23) to 8.30% (8.16-8.43) (p=0.046). Triglyceride levels rose from 189.17 mg/dl (181.13-197.21) to 215.12 mg/dl (202.80-227.45) (p=0.001). Significant deterioration in glucose (p<0.000), triglycerides (p<0.001), and HbA1c (p=0.046) levels was observed during the pandemic. Conclusion: The COVID-19 lockdown negatively impacted the glycemic control and lipid profiles of patients with type 2 diabetes, indicating a potential worsening of metabolic parameters during this period.

COVID-19 kısıtlamalarının Türkiye'deki tip 2 diyabetli hastaların üzerindeki sonuçları

Abstract

Amaç: Türkiye'de koronavirüs hastalığının (COVID-19) yayılmasını önlemek için Mart 2020'de ulusal bir karantina başlatılmıştır. Tip 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) hastalarında karantinanın glisemik ve lipid parametrelerini kötüleştirebileceği varsayılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, karantinanın DM hastaları üzerindeki etkilerini araştırmaktır.Yöntem: Akdeniz Üniversitesi Hastanesi'ne 11.03.2019-10.03.2021 tarihleri arasında başvuran Tip 2 DM hastaları dahil edilmiştir. Hastaların hastane veri tabanındaki klinik ve laboratuvar verileri (yaş, cinsiyet, glukoz, kreatinin, LDL, trigliserit, HDL, hemoglobin, HbA1c) toplandı ve analiz edildi.Bulgular: Bu çalışmaya 1715 DM hastası dahil edildi. Erkek ve kadın hastaların dağılımı sırasıyla 828 (%48,2) ve 887 (%51,8) idi. Pandemi öncesi ve sırasında kliniğe başvuran hasta sayısı sırasıyla 930 ve 785 idi. Pandemi öncesinde ve sırasında başvuran hastaların ortalama glikoz düzeyi sırasıyla 153 (149,25-15747) mg/dl ve 165 (160,14-170,62) mg/dl idi (p-değeri <0,001). Pandemi öncesinde ve sırasında başvuran hastaların ortalama HbA1c değeri sırasıyla 8,11 (7,99-8,23) ve 8,30 (8,16-8,43) idi (p-değeri: 0,046). Pandemi öncesinde ve pandemi sırasında başvuran hastaların ortalama trigliserit değerleri sırasıyla 189,17 (181,13-197,21) mg/dl ve 215,12 (202,80-227,45) mg/dl'dir (p-değeri: 0,001). Hastaların pandemi öncesi ve pandemi süresince demografik özellikleri karşılaştırıldığında, glikoz (p<0.000), trigliserit (p<0.001) ve HbA1c (p<0.046) düzeylerinin istatistiksel olarak kötüleştiği tespit edilmiştir.Sonuçlar: Sonuçlarımız, karantinanın hem erkeklerde hem de kadınlarda metabolik sendromun kötüleşmesine yol açtığını göstermiştir.
