Prevalence, distribution, and impaction patterns of impacted teeth in adults: a retrospective panoramic radiographic study in a university hospital

Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of impacted teeth, their distribution according to tooth number, and their impaction patterns using panoramic radiographs in individuals who presented to Batman University Faculty of Dentistry Hospital. Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, panoramic radiographs of individuals aged 18 years and older who attended Batman University Faculty of Dentistry Hospital within a one-year period were evaluated. A total of 409 individuals were included. The presence of impacted teeth, their distribution according to tooth number, and impaction patterns (vertical, mesioangular, distoangular, horizontal, and buccolingual) were assessed on panoramic radiographs. Age was categorized as 18-30, 31-40, 41-50, and ≥51 years. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 27.0.1, and relationships between variables were analyzed using the chi-square test (p<0.05). Results: Of the 409 patients included, 228 (55.7%) were female and 181 (44.3%) were male. At least one impacted tooth was detected in 165 patients (40.3%). No significant association was found between sex and the presence of impacted teeth (p=0.842). Impacted teeth were observed most frequently in the 18-30-year age group, and the likelihood of having an impacted tooth in this group was approximately 3.1 times higher than in older age groups (OR=3.09; 95% CI: 2.04-4.65; p<0.001). A total of 366 impacted teeth were evaluated, and mandibular third molars were the most frequently impacted teeth. Vertical impaction was the most common pattern, and a significant association was found between tooth number and impaction pattern (p<0.001). Conclusion: Impacted teeth were found to have a considerable prevalence among adults in the Batman region, with mandibular third molars being the most commonly affected teeth. Panoramic radiographic evaluation is an important tool for the early diagnosis and clinical management of impacted teeth.
