Triglyceride–Glucose Index and Atherogenic Index of plasma in migraine: a cross-sectional study of cardiometabolic surrogate markers

Abstract

Aims: Migraine is a common neurological disorder that has been associated with various metabolic and cardiovascular conditions. The Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) Index and the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) are practical markers used to assess insulin resistance and cardiometabolic risk. This study aimed to evaluate TyG and AIP levels in patients with migraine and compare them with healthy controls. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included adult patients diagnosed with migraine according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd edition (ICHD-3). Demographic and clinical data, along with laboratory parameters, were recorded. TyG Index and AIP values were calculated and compared with those of age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. Results: TyG Index and AIP values were significantly higher in patients with migraine compared to controls. Glucose and TyG levels were highest in patients with chronic migraine. In the episodic migraine group, both indices were positively correlated with BMI, whereas TyG also showed a positive correlation with age. Conclusion: Elevated TyG and AIP values in patients with migraine may reflect underlying cardiometabolic alterations and vascular susceptibility. These surrogate indices may contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between migraine and cardiometabolic pathways.
